To mark the 150th birthday of steam locomotive “Poplar”, the engine was a guest of the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) at their train maintenance depot in Poplar.
The steam engine “Poplar”, owned by The Terrier Trust, is a Terrier class 0-6-0 tank engine and is a sister of “Stepney”, well known by generations of children from the Thomas the Tank Engine books. Local children on school visits got to see a real life steam engine and climb on board.
“Poplar” was built by the LB&SCR (London Brighton and South Coast Railway) in 1872 and visited London as part of a National Lottery funded school education project. “Poplar” can normally be found pulling trains on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.
