RAF Biggin Hill was an RAF Fighter Command station in World War Two. As part of 11 Group, its squadrons of Spitfires, Hurricanes and Defiants defended the South Coast of England from the Luftwaffe.
The RAF station played a central part in the Battle of Britain – the only battle fought entirely in the skies and was called “The Strongest Link”, hence the title of the Biggin Hill memorial and garden. The station crest for RAF Biggin Hill features an unbroken chain surrounding a sword.
The Strongest Link Memorial
The memorial is made up of hundreds of individual pieces of metal joined together. When viewed from certain angles, memorial’s construction makes the memorial almost ghost like as the viewer looks through it. The memorial was unveiled on 15th September 2022, Battle of Britain Day, by Randolph Churchill who is the grandson of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.
