Visiting Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar

Spitfires are tightly associated with Biggin Hill. No longer a Royal Air Force base, there are still Spitfires at the airport in the Spitfire Factory. Spitfires, and quite a few other types as well.

Anyone can book a tour of the hangar which is how these pictures were taken. The guides on both my visits were extraordinarily knowledgeable about the Battle of Britain and the individual aircraft in their fleet.

Spanish Hispano Buchon Painted as a Messerschmitt Bf 109

By stunning good luck my tour coincided with the arrival of a Buchon, painted to look like a wartime German Messerschmitt Bf 109. A new addition to the collection, the aircraft was built in Spain after World War Two and subsequently used in the 1969 Battle of Britain film.
