Bethnal Green Fire 20th Anniversary
20th July 2024 marked the 20th anniversary of the Bethnal Green Fire in which two London Firefighters lost their lives. The deaths of Billy Faust and Adam Meere led to substantial changes in London Fire Brigade’s equipment and procedures.
Whitechapel Fire Station Mural Unveiling
A mural was painted by local East London artist David Speed to mark 2024’s 20th anniversary which was unveiled on the side of Whitechapel fire station at which both Billy and Adam were based.
Amongst the many gathered to attend the memorial service were their immediate family, Firefighters who attended the fire on the night 20 years ago and current operational Firefighters.
Mia Hilborn, a London Fire Brigade Chaplain, blessed the memorial with water taken from the tank of one of Whitechapel’s operational fire engines.
Memorial Service at St John on Bethnal Green
Red Plaque Memorial in Museum Gardens, Bethnal Green
Near to the fire’s location in Museum Gardens, close to Bethnal Green Fire Station, a Red Plaque has been installed by the Fire Brigade Union.
Lambeth Memorial Panel
London Fire Brigade’s former headquarters is still an operational fire station in which is located the Memorial Hall. Billy Faust and Adam Meere’s names are inscribed on the peace time memorial.
