Cooper’s Company 2025 Cask Race
For the fourth year running, The Worshipful Company of Coopers organised their popular cask race as a fundraiser for their affiliated charities. Coopers are one of the City of London’s Livery Companies which have a history going back centuries.
The City of London’s Livery Companies were created as trade organisations to maintain standards and train people entering the profession. Coopers represents the cooperage industry which covers people making traditional wooden beer barrels.

The casks in the race, even though empty, were heavy and had a mind of their own where they wanted to go – anything but a straight line.

The teams all had close links with the City of London.

There were a few cuts and bruises as some of the racers took a few spills. They were quickly patched up by the St John’s Ambulance unit who were in attendance.

Three race lanes were marked with tape on the pavement across Guildhall Yard, the home of the City of London’s Government. Each team had four members taking it in turn to push the casks to the far end where there was a marshal in each lane to make sure they went round the cone marking the end of the lane.
Changeovers, as the team relayed the barrel, were fast. When the fourth runner brought the barrel back to the start, the final thing to do was stand the cask upright on the rubber mat.
