Aggregate Carrier Bert Prior In Deptford

The River Thames is still very much a working river used by passengers, freight and leisure. Big cargo ships go into the Thames Estuary ports and smaller freight vessels, such as the coaster Bert Prior, work up the river into London.

When photographed, Bert Prior was working as an aggregate carrier for J. J. Prior, a company with a long history. Each voyage brought in around 280 tons of aggregate into for the concrete plant at Brewery Wharf on Deptford Creek, a short distance up the River Thames from Greenwich.

To access the wharf, the bascules of Deptford Bridge were raised in the same way as Tower Bridge. Having reversed into the creek and tying up, a crane then discharged the cargo which had been brought from Fingringhoe in Essex. Deptford Creek is the mouth of the River Ravensbourne, a tributary of the River Thames.
