Accession Day 2025 Gun Salute

Monday the 8th September was the third anniversary of King Charles III’s accession to the British crown at the moment his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away at Balmoral. The Accession happening due to the death of the previous Monarch, there are no celebrations, but the event is marked by the firing of gun salutes.

In London, King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired their guns at 12:00 in Hyde Park. The Honourable Artillery Company fired their guns from the Tower of London having brought them down from their barracks at Moorgate in the North of the City of London. There convoy was lead by an officer in a Land Rover followed by three Pinzgauer, each towing a 105mm gun.

At the Tower of London, their gun salute started at 13:00, with three 105mm field guns firing in turn for a total of 62 rounds. 21 were fired because it was a 21 gun salute, a further 21 were fired as the location is a Royal Palace and Fortress with a final 20 fired to acknowledge the City of London.

The convoy then returned back to Moorgate with the way cleared by a Police escort.

Coronation Day on 6th May is when the crowning of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey is celebrated.
