The Kirby Estate Memorial Wall
In November 2022, local schools came and painted poppies across the wall of the playground to make The Kirby Estate Memorial Wall.
Chris Dowse from the Kirby Estate writes:
“We always wanted to utilise the huge wall in our park with the ‘kids of the Kirby’ .. but when we realised how big it was we came up with the idea to invite local schools down to help us fill it completely. within the one giant wall there is 6 individual small walls with brick pillars breaking it up.
We decided to keep the first wall for the estate kids to paint their own poppies and then ask 5 primary schools, we invited Southwark park primary school who brought there year 2 class, then we had St James’ CE Primary school who came with there year 3, next up we had Riverside Primary school and they came with there year 5, penultimately we had Galleywall primary school who brought down there year 2 and last but not least we had Boutcher complete the wall and their year 3 helped to finish it.
Once they had all done there poppies the resident ninjas added the black centres and also created a ‘Tommy Soldier’ along with the spitfire planes all along the wall to finish it off.”
