Formerly known as the London Metropolitan Archives, their Clerkenwell building has sixty miles of shelving containing a treasure trove of London’s history stretching back to their oldest item, the William Charter dating from 1067.
London is defined as (roughly) everything inside the M25 motorway which circles the Greater London area. It is a repository of from across the years recording the evolution of London.
Archive Storage
Featuring movable shelving, the archive stores vast amounts of documents. Everything held by the archive can be searched for using the online catalogue. A (relatively speaking) small proportion of the documents are digitised and can be viewed online.
Conservation
Documents old and new, frequently hundreds of years old, will always need conservation to preserve them for the future.
The archive’s conservation room takes damaged documents and preserves them in a readable format, doing their best to reverse the effects of water and fire damage.
