NLV Pharos Visiting London

The Northern Lighthouse Board is the Scottish equivalent of Trinity House and Commissioners of Irish Lights. Between the three organisations, they maintain lighthouses and navigation marks in the seas around the UK, Ireland and Gibraltar.

To do that work requires a small fleet of ships, of which the NLV Pharos is one operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board.

On 14th September 2019, Pharos passed downstream through Tower Bridge having been visiting London for a few days. During the visit, NLV Pharos was berthed on the River Thames alongside museum ship HMS Belfast.

The visit of NLV Pharos to London was part of the 2019 London International Shipping Week (LISW).

Background

  • The NLV prefix stands for Northern Lighthouse Vessel
  • Pharos was the name of the lighthouse at Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • The current Pharos came into service in 2007 and is the tenth vessel operated by the NLB to have the name.
  • Trinity House is in London, close to the Tower of London, which you can visit on guided tours, see post.
