On Saturday 22nd July 2023, The Worshipful Company of Carmen hosted the annual Cart Marking Ceremony with the Lord Mayor of London their guest.

The ceremony’s origins stretch back centuries to when carts had to carry a branded plate to allow them to ply for hire.

In the present day the Ceremony of Cart Marking has become a social and charity event.

Branding

Wooden plates are temporarily attached to the vehicles which are then branded with hot irons to create a registration mark. Graham Cole is shown branding a registration plate protected with heat resistant gloves provided by the Worshipful Company of Glovers.
